What is the purpose of LOTO

The Hazardous Energy Control – Lockout/Tagout Program is designed to prevent injuries resulting from unexpected start-up, energization or release of stored energy during servicing and maintenance of equipment.  Physical controls are generally known as Lockout/Tagout, or LOTO, and consist of locks and tags applied to the energy-isolating device of the hazardous energy source.  Without the use of proper LOTO safety procedures, the serviced equipment can unexpectedly start up or otherwise release these forms of energy. This can lead to injuries and even death to the people working on the machine and even to others working in the area or living in the community.
