Initial Determination

The employer shall collect personal samples for a full shift (at least 7 continuous hours), including at least one sample for each shift for each job classification in each work area. To determine if any employee may be exposed to lead at or above the action level.

The employer shall monitor all employee exposure and use the results to check against the base initial determination.

  • Any information, observations, or calculation indicating employee exposure to lead.
  • Any measurement of airborne lead.
  • Any employee complaints of symptoms which may be attributable to exposure to lead.
  • Monitoring can be limited to the sample for any employees who the employer reasonably believes are exposed to the greatest airborne concentration of lead in the workplace.
  • Measurement of airborne lead made in the preceding 12 months.
