Hazardous Articles

What are Hazardous Materials:

  • Hazardous Material means a substance or material that has been determined to be capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety and property when transported in commerce.
  • Hazardous materials are designated under section 5103 (49 USC 5103). A book titled “Handling Hazardous Materials” is readily available that provides very precise information concerning the subject of hazardous materials transport.

Hazardous Article Requirements:

  • Each facility will have a specific company policy that governs the transport of Hazardous Items.
  • The company policy should be reviewed and supervisory level managers consulted for an exact determination of the items that can be transported by helicopters and the required forms to be completed.
  • Some Helicopter companies will not transport or carry hazardous materials. See company policy. Passengers may not be transported (by some companies) if items on board are termed hazardous or dangerous goods. Whenever it is possible, dangerous cargo or hazardous items should be transported to offshore locations by ship. 49 CFR 107 – 180 & 397

Many items are classified as dangerous goods. Some examples of restricted (dangerous/prohibited) articles or items (goods) are:

  • Compressed Gas
    • Corrosive Liquids
    • Flammable liquids
  • Explosives
  • Oxidizing Materials

NOTE: ALL DANGEROUS GOODS REQUIRE PROPER DOCUMENTATION (SPECIFIC MANIFEST/FORMS) AND MSDS.
